Auditions: frequently asked questions
When are auditions?
Ear Candy will have auditions during the first few weeks of classes in the Fall of 2024. Check out our Instagram @asuearcandy for timely updates.
Please plan to be there early to fill out a quick questionnaire about yourself. If you have a time conflict with these dates, please email us at asuearcandy@gmail.com as soon as possible.
What are the requirements
to join?
-You must identify as female or non-binary
-You must be a current student at Appalachian State University
-You must audition in person (video is allowed under special circumstances)
Is prior musical/performance knowledge necessary to audition?
No prior experience is required! Ear Candy is made up of students from a wide variety of majors, and our musical experience levels differ as well.
We don't read sheet music (surprise!), so the ability to read music is not required either.
When are rehearsals?
We rehearse from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. every Thursday in Chapel Willson and 6:00-8:00 p.m. every Sunday at 3rd Place. Occasionally we hold practices from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesdays as needed. Because we're a performance-based group, attendance at all rehearsals is expected!
If you cannot commit to our rehearsal times, it may affect the chances of joining our group. When you arrive for auditions, please let us know of any potential time conflicts with our rehearsal schedule.
What should I expect as far as commitment?
Four hours of rehearsal time per week. Ear Candy is also often asked to sing at campus events, fundraisers, and local festivals– both in and outside of town.
School, work, and illness excuse absences at rehearsals and performances. We have a final concert at the end of each semester, as well as an a capella concert each semester (with the other groups). Acapellageddon is in the fall (competition), and Acapocolypse is in the spring.
What happens in a typical audition?
Sign-in usually starts about a half hour before the auditions are set to begin. You will receive a number (in the order in which you arrive) that will determine your audition order. After a short vocal warm-up as a group, we will take groups of 5 out into the hallway. Then, one by one, you will enter the audition room.
You will not have to sing in front of anyone else that is auditioning, only the members of Ear Candy. In the audition room, you will sing a short solo (a verse and a chorus is preferable). Remember that song choice is extremely important, so consider singing a song that suits your voice and that shows your vocal abilities!
We will contact you within 24hrs to let you know if you've got a callback.
What should I prepare for callbacks?
Please prepare two additional short solos (again, a verse and chorus is fine) of a contrasting style.
For example, if you sang a ballad for the first round, consider singing something more uptempo for callbacks. Also consider selecting something from a contrasting genre. This is a chance for you to show us other sides of your voice!
You will be contacted within 24-48hrs with our final decision.
Can I audition for multiple groups?
Yes! As part of the a cappella community, we encourage you to audition for any and all groups that you are interested in. In the event that multiple groups extend an offer of membership to you, it will be your decision on which group you would prefer to be a a part of.
